Commonwealth Day, held on the second Monday of March, is an annual celebration observed by people all over the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.

This year it falls on Monday 11 March 2024, and today marks the beginning of a week-long series of events and activities happening around the globe – including faith and civic gatherings, debates, school assemblies, flag-raising ceremonies and cultural events.

The theme for Commonwealth Day 2024, and the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, is ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth’.

The theme highlights how the 56 member countries must harness their strengths by building resilience, unlocking potential, leveraging the ‘Commonwealth Advantage’ and fostering a connected, digital Commonwealth.

This transformation is vital to ensure a resilient common future where no one is left behind.

And this must include older people. Older people are critical to our society and it is vital that they are not left behind.

“As child, when the elders spoke their wise words, it only echoes in my ears. As adult, I have crystal clear insight to the wise aphorisms by the elderly.”

― Lailah Gifty Akita, founder of Smart Youth Volunteers Foundation, Ghana.

We believe in an age-inclusive Commonwealth, in which ageism is challenged and the contributions of people of all ages are valued.

We believe that the strongest societies are those that combine the energy, vitality and potential of younger people with the wisdom and experience of elders.”

In the words of Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States:

“The measure of society is how it treats the weakest members.”

Through our work, our vision is for an age-inclusive Commonwealth, one that is free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

Let us ensure no generation is left behind.

This Commonwealth Day, let us bring the generations together so we can all work towards One Resilient Common Future.

Join us to ensure that older people are thoroughly recognised and sustained to live well in an age-inclusive Commonwealth.
