Following two years when much activity was curtailed due to the pandemic, 2022 was a year of significant progress for us.

New team members

We welcomed Reneta D’Souza, based in India to the team in the position of part-time Executive Assistant. Her administrative support is greatly welcomed, and we acknowledge with thanks the support of our partner, Standards Wise International in making this appointment possible.

Events

  • Attendance at  the Commonwealth Health Ministers’ and Sports Ministers’ Meetings and other Commonwealth Virtual events.
  • In September we held a successful international healthy ageing webinar.  We are grateful for the sponsorship of the UK Research and Innovation organisation for this event. Watch the webinar recording here. 
  • In October we held our joint SAGE/CommonAge/Standardswise International Dinner in London.  Read more here.
  • Our delegation of Femada Shamam, Sarah Lamba, Rianna Patterson, Ken Bluestone, Francis Njuakom and Andrew Kavala attended the CHOGM event in Rwanda in June and contributed strongly to the Women’s, Youth and People’s Forums. Read more here. 
  • Hosted by our Rwandan partners in Nsindagiza, led by Elie Mugabowishema, we participated in a spectacular welcoming event in Kigali to mark the start of CHOGM week.
  • We undertook our international mission to Mauritius where our delegation of Andrew Larpent, Dan Levitt, Jacqueline Wong, Mansoor Dalal and David Stevens participated in a week of meetings and events organised by our friends in FIAPA (Mu) under the leadership of Dr Pascale Dinan. Read more here.

Submissions

  • November saw the publication of CommonAge’s submission to the WHO Draft Framework for Meaningful Engagement of People Living with Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health Conditions. We are grateful to Jacqueline Wong for her great work on this. View our submission here.
  • We are delighted to be a part of the Decade of Healthy Ageing network of organisations and have contributed two of our publications to its knowledge resources.

Other key highlights of 2022

  • We continued to support the development of Standards Wise International’s programme of service quality standards across India.
  • We continued our campaign for veterans sport and Commonwealth Masters’ Games. Read more here.
  • Our board colleague Andrew Kavala from Malawi was elected to the GAROP Steering Committee
