CommonAge scholarship delegate Richard Semanda from Uganda

We’re delighted Mr Andrew Semanda will be joining us at the IAHSA/ACSA conference, 30 August – 3 September in Perth on our scholarship programe. He is the executive director and promoter of the Geriatric Respite Care Foundation – Uganda (G.R.C.F-U), which aims to establish a geriatric and palliative medical care facility to address the needs of older persons for health ageing at the clinic and while at home.

In 1999 Mr Semanda co-founded The Aged Family Uganda (TAFU) whose mission is to advocate for and provide support to older persons in Uganda. Now TAFU operates a hospital home care service and has managed income generating projects to support older women, HIV and AIDS projects to support orphaned grandchildren and an adult literacy project for older persons.

TAFU also has a befriending progam that links volunteers to isolated older persons.

Other positions Mr Semanda holds are: director Hospital and Home Care Services and advisor for National Network of Older Persons of Uganda (NNOPU), and he is a partial trainer of health and non-health professionals for Hospice Africa – Uganda.

Mr Semanda trained at the International Institute on Ageing, United Nations – Malta and Oxford University Institute of Ageing. Plus he has conducted training programs in Gerontology in Uganda. Last year Mr Samanda carried out research with WHO Geneva on the health situations of older women and men in Africa (Towards Age-Friendly Cities/Communities).

As a speaker, Mr Semanda has presented at gerontology and palliative care conferences on local and international levels. He was one of the members of the Palliative Care Training Manual authors of ‘Community Based Male caregiver in Africa’.

Other roles Mr Semanda holds include: Chairman of Choice for Children Foundation Netherland Uganda, Chairman of Rise and Shine Dyslexic Organization (RASDO) for Children with specific Learning Difficulties and he is a board member of Nightingale International Mentoring program for seniors.
