Helen was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, into a dairy farming family. The location of home, on the edge of the thriving regional town, and the daily routines of dairy farming provided a great blend of town and country living and learning.
As the Executive for Quality and Service Development within Australian Unity Independent and Assisted Living, Helen is focused upon the evolution, revolution and innovation required to ensure Australian aged care delivers what our customers want.
Helen has chosen to work in the aged care industry for over fifteen years. As General Manager for TriCare Nursing Homes, Chief Operations Officer for Domain Principal Group, and as a Consultant Contractor with organisations in the private, community owned and faith based sectors, Helen has observed practice in over 300 facilities across Australia.
An advocate for innovation, change and teamwork, Helen has undertaken global research to identify alternatives which may add value to the Australian senior service industry.
As the first aged care recipient of the Endeavour Executive Australia Award, and as a SAGE Tourist, Helen has on two occasions visited and observed practice in various environments across the United States and Canada. In 2012, Helen’s international research culminated in a 9 week stint observing practice across the Extra Care Charitable Trust in the United Kingdom, and an immersion workshop on the Green House Model in the USA.
The international research, combined with regular interaction with consumers, has helped Helen introduce innovative education and staff management models. Most recently, Australian Unity pioneered the Better Together service model within residential aged care. This approach incorporates innovative design and highly capable and engaged staff partnering with residents.
With qualifications in Health Service Management, and Adult Education, prior to working in aged care, Helen worked in the international rescue assistance and transport logistics industries.
In early 2017, Helen received an approach from a private investor group keen to establish a high quality retirement and aged care service group in London, UK. Helen, together with her husband Darryl, has relocated to London to work with DGS Capital to establish and operate Amicala. Amicala will provide wellbeing communities for seniors, drawing on all Helen’s vision and learnings to date.
