CommonAge scholarship delegate Hilda Akinyi Owii from Kenya

We are delighted Kenyan Hilda Akinyi Owii accepted our scholarship offer to join us at the IAHSA/ACSA conference, 30 August – 3 September in Perth.

Ms Owii is a research assistant in the Programme on Ageing and Development of the African Population and Health Research Center. Based in Nairobi she is working towards the Programme’s mission, which is to advance research and foster policy engagement on ageing issues in Africa.

Her has extensive experience in the conduct of qualitative and desk-based research on issues of older persons on topical areas includes: the health and wellbeing among older adults in Kenya, the nature and scope of informal or long term care provision for dependent older people in sub-Saharan Africa, and the resilience of older slum residents.

Ms Owii draws the relevant theoretical or conceptual knowledge from her present MSc course in Gerontology, which she is taking through at the Center for Research on Ageing, University of Southampton, UK. Through her thesis, Ms Owii plans to enhance understanding of how physical health enhances quality of life among older slum residents.

Ultimately she wants to develop a community based model that will provide timely recognition and intervention for those older adults who experience declines in functional health
