We were delighted to hear our ambassador for Cameroon Francis Njuakom Nchii, Founder & Executive Director of CDVTA Cameroon was awarded the rank of ‘Knight of Cameroon Order of Valour’ at Cameroon’s National day celebration, 20th May 2016.

This is the second highest Medal Honour in the Republic of Cameroon and Francis was given the award for his over 20 years in the promotion of care and rights of older people and their dependents in Cameroon and beyond.

CDVTA is Cameroon’s leading age-care organisation, with over 18 years’ successful evidence-based, elderly-driven integrated home-based care best practices.

The organisation’s achievements include:

Social Inclusion

  • 450 older people’s social groups created, combating loneliness and enabling age friendly communities for over 350,000 elderly (75% women).
  • Intergenerational learning and sharing among 7,103 children in 87 schools and elderly in 67 communities.
  • Raising awareness on issues of community-wide importance like HIV/AIDS, environment and gender, aimed at changing attitudes and reinforcing integration.

Livelhoods

  • cameroon 2Organic gardening and farming (improved nutrition and food security for over 250,000 people).
  • Goat rearing (>250 donated).
  • Over 30,000 blankets and 28,000 gas storm lamps donated to the neediest older people.
  • Beekeeping, Wash powder, Body lotion and Ointment production and Petty trading.
  • Elderly income and micro-credits have increased in the last 18 years from 18.7% to 40.3% recently
  • Medicinal plants cultivation

Welfare

  • cameroon 1Over 1,000,000 trees planted in 75 communities to fight and control climate change and adaptation.
  • 5 health centers, 5 water projects and 1 social centre constructed and equipped in 6 communities, improving health, sanitation and welfare for 84,500 people.

Rights

  • cameroon 33,800 poor elderly supported with identification documents (85% registering and voting in recent elections making their voices heard).
  • Engage elderly participation in the formulation of policies that promote their rights.
  • Over 109 radio and 60 TV broadcasts, 152 publications featured elderly issues and rights
  • 80 traditional & 150 religious leaders championing elderly rights in official events.
  • National Social Policy on ageing validated by the Cameroon government in 2012.

Education

  • Construction and equipment of classrooms for older people’s grandchildren for better education.
  • Education and learning improved through 34 classrooms constructed, 780 benches, 200 lockers, 233 chairs, and 33 tables donated to 9 schools.
  • Scholarships and learning items provided 100 HIV/AIDS-affected children living with their grandparents (60% girls).
  • Learning materials provided for 3,500 children and 315 teachers, improving teaching and learning.
  • Hygiene, sanitation and education improved for 3,500 children through 44 VIP latrines provided in 9 schools.

Volunteerism

  • CDVTA promotes volunteerism through family members and young people with 480 community volunteers who provide assistance in personal hygiene and household chores for elderly.
